Some managers and professionals seem to thrive amidst change, while others are affected by stress and lose their focus, energy and drive, leading to disengagement or burnout. Are these differences only a matter of natural talent or predispositions, or can we identify trainable skills responsible for thriving at work? Based on a review of studies and observations from cognitive-behavioural approaches to psychological practice, we have developed a practical framework that lists seven skills contributing to Sustainable Performance - the ability to balance long-term goals with short-term needs, maintaining engagement and well-being while pursuing work-related goals. These skills are: (1) staying flexible in stress, (2) motivation and engagement skills, (3) value alignment, (4) adequate self-talk, (5) feedback and recognition skills, (6) change resilience and (7) growth mindset. Measured together these skills constitute the Sustainable Performance Index (SPI). The SPI is a practical tool that provides immediate feedback to participants and on each of the seven pillars and allows for targeted training focusing on the skills that require attention. We have developed immersive training methods for each of the Seven Pillars that allow the participants to build cognitive and behavioural skills allowing for sustained engagement at work.
