New NWO-Open Competition grant on Gender ratios and Power Dynamics in Work Teams

Mark van Vugt (VU) and Wendy Andrews (VU), both associated with the Amsterdam Leadership Lab—together with a team consisting of researchers from the RUG (Nijstad, Hemelrijk) and UvA (Homan)—have received an award from NWO-Open Competition (approx. 800k euros) for their 5-year research project on Gender Ratio and Power Dynamics in Mixed Teams: Implications for Gender Inequality in Organizations. To increase the influence of women at the top of organizations, many countries, including the Netherlands, have introduced gender quotas. But we don't actually know whether changes in gender ratio (the numerical ratio of men to women) result in women having more influence in decision-making. The researchers examine this question from a new perspective in which they hypothesize that individuals (women and men) acquire influence dynamically by claiming and granting it. They examine how this dynamic is reflected in the relative number of promotions of women versus men to senior roles within organizations.
